Instances of failed communication occur extensively in Jonathan Safran Foer’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. In some cases — Oskar and his mother, William Black and his father — increased communication would improve the way characters deal with trauma and loss. However, much of the time, limited communication between characters actually acts as a safety measure against undesirable knowledge. One example of this occurs partway through Oskar’s journey, when Oskar finds himself unable to communicate with the Spanish-speaking woman, Feliz, in Agnes Black’s old apartment. He grasps that Agnes died during 9/11, but his inability to understand Spanish protects him from the answer to â€Å"‘Did [Agnes] have any kids?’† (Foer 196). Feliz’s long response suggests that Agnes probably did have children, but because of the language barrier, Oskar escapes the damaging idea of another parent-less child. Oskar’s interaction w ith Feliz illuminates Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’s central idea that language barriers protect people from unnecessary and harmful knowledge. Oskar has positive associations with Greek simply because of its nature as a foreign language. He and his dad listen to someone speak Greek on the radio, â€Å"which was nice† (Foer 13), even though they â€Å"couldnt understand what he was saying† (Foer 13). Since he primarily associates Greek with his absent grandfather, he immediately speculates â€Å"‘Maybe thats him were listening to’† (Foer 13). Oskar’s inability to understand Greek allows him to feel closer to his grandfather and protects him from the unnecessary information that the voice on the radio belongs to a stranger. This fantasy would not be possible if Oskar could translate Greek into English. Though Oskar wishes to understand Feliz’s words in a way he does not with the Greek reporter, the barriers between the languages serve the same purpose: to protect him from unnecessary and harmful information. Oskar develops an obsession with breaking language barriers that hinders his ability to move on from his father’s death. When he cannot understand Mr. Black and Feliz’s conversation, he â€Å"[gets] angry† (Foer 196). In response, Oskar invents â€Å"a book that list[s] every word in every language† (Foer 316), stating that it makes him â€Å"incredibly angry that people all over the world can know things that I cant† (Foer 256) just because of his limited language. The repeated usage of the word â€Å"angry† pushes Oskar’s desire to break language barriers past the realm of harmless curiosity and into one of negative fixation. His fixation drives him to go to great lengths to translate phrases from foreign languages into English. For example, when he wants to learn details about his father’s death, he must â€Å"‘go to a translator program and find out how to say things in different languages, like . . . ‘people ju mping from burning buildings,’ which is ‘Menschen, die aus brennenden Gebà ¤uden springen’’† and then Google the foreign phrases to locate websites with â€Å"‘videos . . . of bodies falling’† (Foer 256). Learning these gory details inhibits Oskar’s ability to move on, evident through his repeated references to them during the rest of the book. After learning that Agnes Black died during 9/11, Oskar’s mind immediately places Agnes and his father into the roles of jumpers pictured on the foreign websites, â€Å"You saw in some of the pictures that people jumped together and held hands† (Foer 196). This rapid connection proves that access to the websites keeps Oskar focused on his father’s death and prevents him from moving towards acceptance. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’s final pages comprise the very images of a jumper Oskar finds on a foreign website, suggesting that his journey ends wi th him still fixated on his father’s death. The unnecessary and harmful images Oskar finds through breaking language barriers cause him to dwell on the irreversible tragedy of his father’s death with no effective strategies for moving on. Shortly after meeting Feliz, Oskar comes across Fo Black, who also â€Å"didnt speak very good English† (Foer 239). Fo avoids the stressful experience of living in new place by choosing to move from one Chinese-speaking community to another. â€Å"He hadnt left Chinatown since he came from Taiwan, because there was no reason for him to† (Foer 239) suggests that Fo feels uncomfortable with living in a culturally unfamiliar place. By staying in a Chinese-speaking community, Fo utilizes a language barrier to protect himself against potentially harmful culture shock. Staying in Chinatown also enables him to evade unnecessary information about the city he inhabits. Fo conflates the abbreviation â€Å"NY† with the Chinese word ny, thinking all â€Å"I love NY† memorabilia means â€Å"I love you.† It most likely comforts Fo to think that his new home promotes the positive message â€Å"I love you† all over the city. When Oskar clarifies the real mea ning of â€Å"I love NY,† providing Fo with unnecessary information, Fo â€Å"look[s] confused, or embarrassed, or surprised, or maybe even mad† (Foer 239). Fo’s jumbled emotions reflect how Oskar may have felt had he understood Feliz’s answer to â€Å"‘Did [Agnes] have any kids?’† (Foer 196). Oskar’s description suggests that breaking the language barrier leaves Fo worse off, indicating that subjection to unnecessary information can be harmful. Oskar ultimately admits that the book he invented in response to his encounter with Feliz, which lists â€Å"every word in every language,† would â€Å"not be a very useful book† (Foer 256). He may mean that the book seems impractical because of the time and effort it would take to locate a specific word. However, another possible interpretation could be Oskar registering the risk of possessing too much knowledge. MOOTING 101 Want to join a mooting team but you are not sure how to do it ? Where do you begin ? Here are some basic and simple steps you could follow, whether you are a veteran debater or just starting out. Not all of these suggestions will be applicable to everyone, but together they should give an overview of what you will need to do or ought to do in order to be selected for a moot team. Step 1: Always keep your eyes and ears open. There are a number of excellent opportunities for those whom are keen and interested in mooting, but provided you know where to look. Its not difficult to find out about these moot competitions, but opportunities wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t fall into your lap. Keep an eye out at the External Mooting (SIG) Facebook page where the group admin would constantly post notices, announcement or even posters regarding any upcoming moot competition. Do check MMLS as well, this is because most announcement would also be shared by respective lecturers. Most of the announcement would also be posted on the Faculties website as well. Do check regularly with the External Mooting (SIG) committees. Find out who they are and let them know that you are interested in joining that particular moot competition and make sure you find out the datelines for selections. Besides that, if you are interested in one of those à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"bigà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ competitions (for example IHL or Vis), ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not a bad idea to see one of their moots in action before trying out. You donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have to travel all the way to KL to view one of the moots. A simple Google search or an YouTube search would provide you with plenty of options. MMU Mooting teams have numerous practice moots prior to their competition, and if you are willing to sit through an hour or so of the moot, it would give you valuable insight into what is required of you as a mooter, and you would also have the opportunity to determine whether the subject matter of the moot is your cup of tea. Step 2: Preparation Prior to Selection Process. So now you have decided to attend the try outs. But where do you start ? What do you do first ? If you are a first time mooter, the idea of standing (appearing) in a moot can be pretty nerve wrecking (Trust me. Been there, done that). Whats the procedure ? What do you call the judge? How do you address the court or tribunal? (depending on which moot you join). My suggestion would be to do some background check. Check out any of the videos available on either the competition websites, or youtube. Basically what you want to accomplish from watching these videos are you are familiar with the procedure and how are you should prepare. Besides that, the notes and slides uploaded on the External Mooting group would also provide help. The next step is to prepare your topic thoroughly. But many juniors are of the opinion that, since they have not learn that area of the law, they would be in a serious disadvantage. So hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the thing, SIG provides basic training for everyone. The training would focus on the subject matter of the competition and this would really benefit the juniors. So all you guys, come to our next training (y). Familiarize yourself with your materials. This is because, if you are familiar with your material this would make you feel more comfortable especially if you are an inexperienced mooter. Although in a selection moot you will not be expected to have an in-depth knowledge of resources, some showing of research will enhance your presenta tion and often impress the selection panel (ie: Judges). In some of the moots, sadly you will not be given the luxury of getting a reference list handed down to you by your seniors. In these situations the best thing to do is to identify the subject matter or area of law which revolves around the problem and find a basic textbook that will give you an overview of that topic. For example you could refer to the Public International Law texbook, which provides a full chapter on what International Humanitarian Law is, or you could refer to Pleading in Arbitration; A Practitioners Guide for some basic knowledge on arbitration and mediation. Then find some authorities to help your case by doing simple research. For beginners, Google-ing would suffice. Its much better to chose those few cases where you can know, and understand them, rather than blindly memorizing those big name cases in which you would not be able to digest. In a selection, the judges would look towards how you present your case and your style of presentation rather than in depth research. Although having both will definitely put in ahead of the pack. Step 3: Presentation Speaking Practice, Practice and Practice. This is the only way to be ready and really impress the panel of judges for the selection. It is good to practice your presentation before going into the selection moots. Here are some pointers to know what the judges are looking for. Always remember C. E. S. O. Confidence Even if you have butterflies in your stomach, try to speak with confidence. But remember, there is a fine line from being confident and sounding arrogant. Never argue back against the court. You are there to help and assist the court or tribunal and you want to try your best to put them at ease. The only way this can be done is through speaking comfortably in front of them. Eye Contact Probably one of the most important and key criteria in which the judges would look on. DO NOT READ OUT YOUR SCRIPT. That is the worst thing you could do in any moots. Maintain eye contact with all the judges, try to pretend that you are having a conversation with the judges. A very formal conversation. Style Speak slow and clearly. Take note, the judges are also human being, try to be as humble as possible and speak politely with giving proper road signage. If you speak too fast, this would only cause more confusion and this is not a good thing. Take breaks in between your points. This would allow time for you to prepare for any questions and getting ready for your next point. Organization keep your notes tidy and organized. This would be a big advantage when judges atart asking you question and you have all your notes, submission and authorities organized. A tip from the seniors is that they either bind all their submission together with their submission so that it would be easier to refer to. Or you could separate them in binders as well. Chose the most comfortable way for you and go with it. It is also advised to print your submission on a single page and not cramping all in double sided or 4 pages shrink-ed into 1. Do not be cheap. Step 4: Question and Answering session I believe this is the most important element in distinguishing a good mooter with those great mooter. Oneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s ability to answer the question and use that question to reaffirm his / her points is the hallmark of a great mooter. Although sometime you may come across the rare judges who seldom ask questions, Below are some tips for you in handling these different situations. Always answer the question which you have been asked. If you dont know the answer, it can be very tempting to try to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“pusingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  the judge, by twisting and turning the question to avoid it. Some judges may not say anything about it. But yet again there are those old school judge who will immediately stop you and and you to redirect your answer to the court / tribunal. Try giving simple answer by referring to the facts of the case or any principle which you referred too, and if at the very last resort you cannot answer the questio n, the simply say à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Your Excellency, I am unable to assist the court in this matterà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . But remember that statement should be the very last option. Never say à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be dealing with that later in my submissionsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  or à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“my co-counsel will address that laterà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . This is because, if the judge asked you the question at that point of time, meaning that is the question which is currently in his mind. If you dont address that question, chances are that he would still ponder on that point and may not follow your subsequent arguments. A tip commonly used by mooters is that, they would take a few seconds to pause after the question, to give a considered response. A common mistake is when the mooter tries to response quickly and ends up rambling on for a long answer. The Bottom Line The Shack by William P. Young has become a phenomenon. This book -- originally written by Young for his kids -- was rejected by mainstream and Christian publishers alike. Young and friends started their own publishing house to produce it, and now there are more than one million copies in print and it has topped bestsellers charts for weeks. The Shack does not have amazing character depth, and the dialogue sometimes seems forced; however, it is a thought-provoking book that is a worth reading as an entry into thinking about suffering and Gods role in the world. To the first question, I can only say that I think The Shack is asking some of the most important questions people can ask, and exploring the answers in a way that is very accessible. While reading, I understood its appeal -- these are the very questions that I wrestle with in my heart, and Young works through them in a very comforting way. As to whether The Shack is a must read, Id say, that depends. It sort of reminds me of the words, I love you. There is nothing especially unique about them, and they are extremely overused. From certain people or in certain situations, you are likely to dismiss or even be infuriated by hearing them uttered. Of course, from the right person, hearing them can be one of the most powerful experiences of your life. So with The Shack. This is a decidedly Christian answer in a somewhat shallow story with forced dialogue. Its not the best writing in the world, but I can easily see how if you read The Shack at the right moment, it has the power to change your life. I know Im still thinking about it, and I received enough gems from the novel to recommend it to others.

Romeo has just been shortly married to Juliet when he goes to see his best friend, Mercutio. When he finds Mercutio, he is in an argument with Tybalt a Capulet. Tybalt wishes to duel with Romeo. Romeo declines the offer, as he is the cousin of Juliet. (This is the first time anyone takes in consideration of Juliets feelings). Mercutio takes the place of Romeo but is slain by Tybalt. Romeo in a blind fury kills Tybalt: Either thou or I, or both must go with him However, this leaves Juliet an emotional wreck as one of her dearest cousins has been killed by her true love. The Iroquois have greatly contributed to society through initiating the Iroquois confederacy also called the Iroquois League formed in 1570. The North American confederacy consists of five nations called: Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca, which resided in what is now known as Upstate New York. These tribes joined together as the â€Å" 5 civilized tribes† for strength and survival. Between 1715 1722, a tribe called Tuscaroras, who had moved North from California, were formally admitted into the confederacy, as the sixth tribe, but they were non-voting members, but were placed un der the protection of the Confederacy. (Colden, 1973) The Iroquois people were considered a hunter and gatherer society, they had to find and grow all their own food. In the early Iroquois stage the Iroquois people would grow maize and gather fish in the summer, but in the winter they would only hunt, these were there main sources of food. Later in the Iroquois stage there was an abundant source of agriculture farming, and they were finally able to grow corn, beans, and squash, which made up eighty percent of their daily diet. (Ali Behan, 2010) When trading among bands the Iroquois would use wampum’s, traditional, sacred shell beads as a type of currency. (Snyderman, 1961) The Iroquois families built longhouses made of logs, which were divided into several compartments; this is how they acquired their name â€Å" People of the Longhouse†. Each family was in a separate compartment and each longhouse was surrounded in fort like form keeping their enemies afar. Colden 1973) The tribes picked areas surrounding Lake Ontario to live on; thus having lots of lakes and rivers to fish, abundant sources of thick wood, and land that was fertile enough to farm on. Summers were long, dry and hot, while winters were cold enough resulting in death. There were also abundant sources of trees to cut down to build shelter. The socia l structure of Iroquois tribes was based on matrilineal principles, as women owned all property and determined kinship. After marriage, men would move into the women’s longhouse, usually along with her parents. Their children would become members of the women’s clan. (Baskin, 1982) Situation/ Description A problem that came from the European influence on the Iroquois was alcoholism. Seventeen century Iroquois used alcohol for its â€Å"hallucinogenic properties† and then proceeded to use it as a â€Å"way of communicating with the supernatural†. (Conrad, 1999) As the people of these tribes realized what alcohol could help them accomplish, the Iroquois people began to drink more, becoming dependent on it, and resulting in their alcohol addictions. As the years went on, the emphasis of alcohol shifted to using it as a release. This would reduce anxiety and liberate aggression (Conrad, 1999). Alcoholism and substance abuse is still seen profoundly in the Iro quois nations. There were also issues of suicide in the Iroquois nations most commonly during the eighteen and nineteen century. These were hard times of change for the Iroquois, dealing with loss of lands, scarcity of game. They changed from a hunting and gathering society to an agricultural society. The Iroquois also believed that each person is given an allotted life span, and when a person believed his time was up and a natural death could not happen it was time for them to take their own life. The primary and very painful method of committing suicide was through the ingestion of the root of the water hemlock. This method became a tradition of the Iroquois tribe. (Fenton, 1986) The main forms of environmental issues included the activities of clearing and cutting down forests for new agriculture fields. This occurred primarily when their prior land was nutrient depleted. The Iroquois allied with the British and the French in the 1600 and 1700s, but also fought with them continuo usly over land issues. When the Europeans arrived in the area around the New York State in the early seventeenth century they became important trading partners to the Iroquois. The expansion of European settlement upset the Iroquois’ economic balance and forced confinement of the Iroquois clans to reservations. This also forced them to adapt to a traditional economic system. The loss of their cultural identity proved to be intolerable to these proud people. The Iroquois were also plagued by epidemics of disease, including the smallpox, brought by the Europeans resulting in the depopulation of the Iroquois. It then became harder for the Indians to keep the seats of the Confederacy of the grand council filled. The consequences were the confederacy continued to remain a symbolic system, but the operating confederacy had to change their policies and resort to other leaders (Colden, 1973). The French and Iroquois wars were conflicts fought in the late seventeenth century in Easter n N. America, these wars were commonly known as Beaver Wars. The Iroquois wanted to expand their territory and also take control over the fur trade. The Five Nations banned together lead by the Mohawk tribe, who had then became known as the leader of five nations, against one of their rivals, the Algonquin tribes. In the history of North America, these wars are known to be one of the bloodiest series of disputes. The French then decided they needed the Iroquois as allies against the English invasions, after the Iroquois lost their Dutch allies. Finally in 1698 the Iroquois filed a suit for peace finishing the wars. The Iroquois and French then signed the 1701 Grande Paix (Great Peace) agreement allowing refugees back onto their land. Aquila, 1983) Options/ Outcomes There are said to be 125000 Iroquois people still living in seventeen scattered communities, in the United States and Canada, primarily in Ontario, Quebec, and New York. These people are still dealing with the problems of their ancestors. The main issue they face today is still land. After the American Revolution, which resulted in the division of the Iroquois, an international border separated them. Many projects came about that did not benefit the Iroquois such as the development of highways, power lines, railroads, etc. resulting in the loss of land. There were also many land sales that deteriorated their territory quickly. (Haudenosaunee Today, 2011) Today the Iroquois maintain strong links to each other even though they live miles from each other. They do this through family, political, and religious beliefs. Each community now has their own government, and their main chiefs still meet, as the Iroquois confederacy, to stay independent from the US or Canadian controls. (Haudenosaunee Today, 2011) Their society has changed immensely in the way they live. They no longer live in longhouses even though they can be still found on some reservations. Instead they have updated into modern living, and li ve in framed houses or trailers, but are still situated on reservations. Their communities have now taken the look of any small community including shops, libraries, nursing homes, restaurants, etc. Some communities have built culture centers and museums to show their ancestors histories. These show how far they have come as a community, and all the obstacles they had to face. (Haudenosaunee Today, 2011) One major problem seen on the majority of reservations is the standard of living. It is particularly lower on reservations compared to the white communities surrounding them. Although many of these Iroquois are wage workers, many of them are on welfare, causing unemployment to be a serious problem. (Haudenosaunee Today, 2011) To proceed in a positive way, I believe the Iroquois need to come to an agreement and work with the â€Å"white† people they fought with so many years ago. Doing so could provide them and their future Iroquois with more opportunities and start modern tra ditions that relate more closely with today’s societies. Still allowing them to pass down their stories and many obstacles to all future Iroquois and keeping cultural traditions as all modern cultures do. Conclusion/ Future The Iroquois culture remains interesting and questionable. It will be interesting to see how the present and future Iroquois will relate and act, with respect to their ancestors, and how they will be raised. After many centuries of unresolved land issues, is there any way to fix these problems and live as one environment, to give every community equal chances. Will they follow the path of their ancestors and continue to fight. One of the most fascinating things about the Iroquois is the fact that they are a matrilineal society will they ever adapt to the North American society where it is said that men are in main control.
